Why IR Protection Belongs in Every UV Conversation

UV protection is now table stakes — every patient expects it. Infrared protection isn't, and that's exactly the gap: it's an easy add-on conversation your competitors likely aren't having, and the underlying rationale is straightforward to explain at the dispensing table.

The core argument: life expectancy keeps rising (from 68.5 years for German women born in 1950 to 83.4 years for those born in 2015), which means patients' eyes are under cumulative strain for far longer than previous generations. Since retinal tissue can't repair itself, minimizing lifetime exposure matters — and IR protection is a piece of that most patients have never had explained to them.

Best positioning: anti-aging / long-term eye health, and post-cataract-surgery protection — both are compelling, easy-to-understand hooks that go beyond generic sun protection messaging.

The Technical Case (Useful for Patient Conversations)

The atmosphere filters out more UV than infrared — so IR reaches the eye largely unfiltered

Standard sunglasses don't absorb infrared at all, and worse: darkened lenses cause pupils to dilate, letting in more IR than going without sunglasses

IR wavelengths (780–10,000nm) penetrate deep into the eye, including the retina, and cause a warming effect that contributes to cataract formation over time
